In April 2019, Bauhaus (one of the most influential art & design schools) turns 100 years old—and we want to celebrate!!!

YOUR CHALLENGE

We want you to redesign a famous logo in the Bauhaus style. Be sure to consider Bauhaus’ design principles, use simple shapes and colors, and surprise us with a fresh take on a classic brand.

Some logos to consider are Apple, Google, McDonald's, Starbucks, Lego, Amazon, Nike, Adidas, Mercedes, Visa, Haribo, and Wikipedia—but you’re free to choose any famous logo you like!

ABOUT BAUHAUS

Bauhaus had a tremendous impact on design and is still influencing designers’ work today—not just in Germany, but all over the world. Founded in 1919, its mission was to provide a new, affordable, plain and utilitarian design philosophy that could be used by anyone, anywhere. The school has had such a huge influence on the history of design, and its style is easily discerned to this day.

THE KEY PRINCIPLES OF BAUHAUS:

• FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION: Bauhaus united form and function by giving them equal importance. Unnecessary embellishment was out and purposeful art was in. Honesty of construction, death to decoration.

• CRAFTSMANSHIP & MASS PRODUCTION UNITED: Merging art and craft while using new technology.

• LESS IS MORE: Good design required simplicity. Minimalism wasn’t just a style choice, it was a holistic view of the whole process.

HOW DO I RECOGNIZE BAUHAUS STYLE?

• TYPOGRAPHY MATTERS: The Bauhaus concentrated on simplified fonts and avoided the much heavier renderings of the standard German typography of the time. Designers started wrapping text around objects, and also learned to arrange type horizontally, vertically and even diagonally — which was not common at the time. They also refused to combine lower and upper case types in a same work and preferred the use of sans-serif fonts.

• LOVE OF GEOMETRY: The Bauhaus showed a deep love of simple geometry. Clean, abstract and geometric forms were constantly used

• MATERIAL (ARCHITECTURE & FURNITURE): Steel, glass and reinforced concrete were used in the so-called skeleton construction of buildings - a steel construction with a glass curtain wall. In general: rather metal than wood.

• FORM: A Bauhaus-style house is usually cube-shaped with a flat roof. Typical are also windows that go around the corner. Even smaller designs such as everyday objects are made up of simple geometric shapes. Flowers and curved shapes are avoided.

• COLOR: The typical Bauhaus colors are the primary colors yellow, blue and red. In addition, white and black are also used.
