I am an Americana Country (influenced by country, rock and roll, roots music) singer/songwriter. www.rachelallyn.com
What's your vision?
Definite potential for more design work after this contest wraps - press kit, website and social media elements, maybe a logo, etc. Full 4 panel CD jacket layout/design. Cover, back panel, left inside panel with album credits, right inside panel (under CD tray), the CD itself, and the spine. The CD will be manufactured by Disc Makers. Their templates are available in InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Quark XPress, and Corel Draw. Link to templates (use 4 panel 1 Tray and Disc Label): http://www.discmakers.com/templates/Digipaks.asp The cover photo will be the one with me on the sidewalk in front of the theater. It is not cropped – you will crop it to fit the cover as you see fit. Keep in mind that it is more of a scene than a portrait, aka, don’t crop it too closely. My photographer edited out the names that were on the marquee. He tried to get the names out, but had a hard time making it look good, so he just blew it out. I have attached the original files in case you want to try. I also have the photo shop file of the final, but was unable to attach it. I can send separately if needed. Cover needs artist name and album title. EDIT - a few designers have really nailed the album name on the marquee. Having seen this, I am pretty certain that this is what I want for the cover. The more you can make it look like it is a part of the photo, the better. The back cover will be the more serious photo of me onstage inside the theater. 7 Song titles, a barcode (lower right corner), and copyright info (in attached doc) along the bottom need to be added. We need to get the barcode and we will supply this as soon as we can. Under the CD tray will be the from-behind theater interior shot, in black and white (it’s currently color). It is currently uncropped. I want to be able to see as much of the theater as possible in the shot. The left inside panel is where all the album credits will go - musicians, producers, writers, etc. All info needed is attached. You will put your name/company name where it says “CD Design by.” The background of this panel is up in the air. Initially, I wanted the from-behind shot to span both panels, but It’s not the right size for this and I think it’s too busy of a photo anyway to be able to write all the info needed over. Maybe we can fade the remaining image from under the tray over the spine into black or dark gray, or maybe we just do a black or dark gray background. This will take some fiddling on your part, I think. Another idea all together would be to use the photo of me smiling under the cd tray and try to make the left panel look like the blue curtain is continuing over the spine. I attached this photo for this possibility. As for the CD itself, it probably depends on what happens with the inside panel designs, so this will be open to interpretation! It should, however, include my name and the album name. Maybe the 7 track names. We should probably keep it simple. The spine should have the artist and album name.
I am including in the attachments all the necessary information that needs to be included in the design. I attached 3 different versions of the album credits. The full version, a medium version, and a short version. I’m 99% sure the short version will be the only one that fits, but the longer versions are there just in case we can fit more in. This album is an Americana album. Americana is country music, but country that exists outside the current mainstream. I consider myself a country singer, but I am certainly coloring outside the lines here. There are a lot of rock influences - think the Rolling Stones album Exile on Main Street and early Elvis Costello records. There’s a lot of steel guitar. I went for a bright 70's singer songwriter, leather, suede, and fringe look for the photos. The cover is vibrant, and so are the songs. But there is a definite vintage feel to the whole thing. This isn't modern country music, so the design shouldn't follow the current atheistic you'd see on, say, a Carrie Underwood album cover. I’ve been really inspired lately by the look of Hatch Show Print posters. They are bright, the lettering is clear and simple (nothing fancy scripty here), and they look just as cool now as they did when they started printing them in the early 1900’s. I don’t want fonts that are super western or southern looking though either. This is more inspiration for overall vibe - not necessarily exactly how I want the CD to look! The font on the color cover is really great. That and the Hatch Show Print stuff should get you going. Have fun!

We received a great logo. Ocelot is creative in design and is very professional to work with. Very good communication with Ocelot, he listened to what we were looking for and responded promptly. At the close of the contest he was able to provide us with the file formats we requested that are required for printing and publication.
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
We think contests are a super fun way to get design.
