Good day! Our latest contest will be for a biopic on the Victorian wrestling champ, Ivan Poddubny, THE IRON IVAN. Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Poddubny This is a high production, Russian language period piece, and yet it is whimsical and full of adventure. You can watch the screener here: screener link: https://vimeo.com/199075636 password: SY8976 For this contest it is highly advised to watch the film, as the overall tone is counter-intuitive to stereotyped heavy historical dramas. Rather, it has charm and humor with dashes of drama. For the artwork, there is definitely certain aspects that should be considered for the overall look and feel: 1) Time period: Setting is Victorian to mid 20s. 2) Culture: Ivan Poddubnuy is a Russian hero/icon. His love for Russia and the culture of Russia permeates throughout the film. 3) Entertainer: This is more ambiguous, but Ivan was both a circus performer and a wrestling competitor. I've created a pinterest feed which contains imagery that conveys some ideas for the poster: https://www.pinterest.com/anatolchavez/iron-ivan/ Although these are varied, each contain a piece of what we are trying to achieve. The "Lady Mechanika" has a great composition that could work for the action/period piece we are going for, albeit perhaps a bit too steampunk. I can picture Ivan (or perhaps Ivan with his wife, Masha next to him or above him on trapeze) with all the trimmings of circus, victorian age in the background. The Robert Downey Jr.Jude Law SHERLOCK movies posters are not the right color scheme, but they do have a rich finishing of photos, with nice textures. Being that THE IRON IVAN is a very rich production with incredible detail, this kind of finishing would be suitable. As for color scheme, the film has a sepia tone, and yet still has a good deal of colors. I think a limited palette (possibly golds/browns/reds?) and pops of other colors could be nice. The circus posters are a close (but not quite) look this idea. Thank you!
Overall, use your best judgement! These notes are hopefully a way to provide direction without being to stifling. If you have an idea outside of these ideas, go for it!
