Entertainment & The Arts
The Royal Adelaide Show is the biggest event on South Australia’s calendar. The Show (the equivalent of a State Fair or an agricultural Expo) plays a key role in showcasing the primary industry (agriculture and horticulture) to the local community. Families, teenagers and couples make up the 500,000 crowd at the Show each year. The Show is run by the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia and has been exhibiting the country’s best farm produce for 178 years. Our annual competitions attract over 30,000 entries across 62 categories from prize dairy goat to best sponge cake. We are an essential link to educating urban families about where their food comes from and bringing rural culture to the city. We are also a massive 10 day fun fair. Carnival rides, stage shows, adrenaline-packed arena demonstrations; providing entertainment to the masses is a huge part of our business. Target audience for the Royal Adelaide Show is Families. Target audience for mascot in particular: • Primary interaction will be for 6-11 year olds • Must be non-scary for 2-5 year olds • Funny and cool enough for kids aged +12 • May not come through in the original design so much as it will in the implementation, but should have a second layer of fun which will go over kids heads but resonate with adults. You can find out more about us by visiting theshow.com.au or taking a look on your preferred search engine.
What's your vision?
We require a mascot for our Show brand. This mascot will primarily be a costume character who interacts with patrons; they will be photographed for marketing and digital use. There is a possibility that an illustration may be used on our website, app, marketing collateral, etc, but the focus is in the real-life version. Humanoid, as far as being bipedal with two active arms, is essential. The mascot has to be fun, bright and friendly. We cannot stress enough that the face of the mascot must be friendly and happy. The purpose of the mascot is to: • Enable the public to better identify, remember and engage with the Show and Show products • Always be available for positive promotion • Promote merchandise and make money, support and promote our sponsors • Engage the public, capture their imagination and be a whole bunch of fun for years to come! Applications of the mascot will include: • Costume – Must be able to interact with children, be fully mobile, able to give hugs and high-5’s. Not so tall as to be cut off in photos, but tall enough to stand out in the crowd. Participate in media call outs with kids and families • Show specific – Lead the mascot parade each day. Cannot be too rotund and cumbersome, we want it to be able to go on Show rides with patrons (fitting its butt in a dodgem car is a good guide to utilise), do basic dances and clown around. Pose for photos with kids and families, participate in Main Arena events and stage shows. • Digital/Paper version – Family friendly and able to be used in media spots, on the website Mascots we love in our office that we think you should check out: • Phillie Phanatic – he’s active and engaging, gets cheeky with adults and goofy with kids – his participation in on-field stunts is what we want for our mascots main arena events. See also ‘Raymond’ Tampa Bay, ‘Slider’ Cleveland, ‘Orbit’ Huston and ‘Southpaw’ Chicago • Red & Yellow – the M&M’s are terrific at bridging that audience of kids and parents. Kids laugh at goofball Yellow whilst parents laugh at full-of-himself Red • Mickey Mouse – timeless happy character kids and adults both love • Fairchild from the Minnesota State Fair – an example of a Show/Fair costume and cartoon mascot working in unison • Pride the Lion – the Great Brittan team mascot (not the overall Olympic mascots) at the London Olympics has one of the kindest faces we have seen in a mascot, great for young children whilst not looking baby-cartoonish Mascot ideas we came up with as appropriate in our meetings are (in NO order of preference): • Scarecrow • Bee • Wheat bushel • Working dog (like a blue heeler) with an Akubra • Totally made up Alien/Thing that comes to Adelaide for the “Greatest Show in the Universe” - we'd like to see some more of these designs please! Mascots we DO NOT want: • A farm animal (other than the working dog possibility) • A human • A food product
Although our logo remains constant, our lock-ups and imagery changes every year to keep it fresh, so we don’t need to stick with a certain colour scheme or image style. Comments and feedback will only be given in English, so a good grasp of English is necessary to ensure efficient communication/feedback.
