Luke64 got their new button or icon by running a design contest:
New icon wanted for PC software

We manufacture and supply diesel engine indicators (=measurement devices for big diesel engines, e.g. used in container ships). We have a strong background in mechanical devices and also offer electronic counterparts (handheld devices).
What's your vision?
For the Windows software (XP/Vista/7) used to transfer and analyze measured data from one of the electronic indicators (the DPI-Type50) we need a nice program icon. As we sell a (very successful) mechanical indicator of the same name (Type 50), we'd like to incorporate its well-known design into the icon. What these devices mainly do is measure a pressure curve of one cylinder of the engine at a time while it is running. Please find both indicators, mechanical and electronic here: http://leutert.com/docs/maritime/Products_Maritime.htm For an older software for the DPI2 (Windows 95), we used the shape of the Type50-indicator in the icon. Please find images of the ugly old icon and a recent photo of the Type50 indicator attached. Though we still like the idea of using the Type50-indicator in the icon, we also thought about having a more "electronic" or added "digital" appeal to it. The software will be base of future devices as well, so it shouldn't contain the name "Type50" ("DPI" or even the Leutert-Logo would be ok). Regarding the color scheme, Leutert uses RAL5010 as its main blue, so it might be helpful to use fitting colors. I attached the splash screen of the software only for your inspiration. Finally, our customers are professional industrials which might not like modern "App-icon design". So we suggest not trying too uncommon designs. :) We're looking forward to seeing your designs!
As we don't have experience in icon design, we'd like to receive it from you in the ready-to-use sizes for Windows XP/(Vista)/7-sizes (16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 256x256) and formats (.ico (containing all sizes), .png).
