UPDATE: Hello designers! Thank you for taking a look at this project. I wanted to draw your attention to the cover references in the link at the end of my brief. This is the kind of atmosphere I'm looking for in a cover for my book - danger and action. Nearly all of the covers in the ref. only use 2 or 3 striking colours with the title in black, white or yellow. While I don't want to limit you, I am hoping for a cover that is bold in it's use of light and darkness. I also wanted to add that there is a recurring symbol of circles in the book -- the sun/moon Ederiss clock, (see the pininterest ref), the glittering gold/brown iris and the sun itself which plays a big role in the world of these people. There is also a loadstone pendant which is like a compass, pointed arrows on each end. I am not looking for a literal rendering of these objects, but anything iconic which could embrace them would be very welcome! If you are illustrating with original material please feel free to submit sketch/ rough designs so that you don't spend too much time on something that I don't think will fit the target market. Thanks again for your time. Claire BACKGROUND AND OTHER DETAILS This is a Young Adult FANTASY NOVEL TITLE: SHADOW WEAVER SUBTITLE: THE EDERISS CHRONICLES (Please keep subtitle small) AUTHOR: CLAIRE MERLE THE SHORT STORY PITCH: A mind-traveling girl becomes a slave, wheedling herself into the services of an amnesic Prince who needs her to discover his would-be-assassin; a discovery that is key to her freeing her kidnapped brother. THE LONGER PITCH: In a Kingdom where those born with glittering eyes are feared and forced into brutal slavery, sixteen-year-old Mirra and her glitter-eyed younger brother have spent most of their lives hiding in the outlands. When bounty hunters strike down her father and capture her brother, Mirra sets off after them. But injured and unprepared for her journey, there exists only one way to keep her brother in her sights: Give herself up. Mirra’s own value is almost priceless – she is a shadow weaver, able to travel through peoples memories while hiding her talent as her glitter-eyes have settled. Taken to a black-market settlement at the edge of the Kingdom, Mirra manipulates her captors into selling her to a mysterious nobleman. A young amnesic who needs her to unravel his shrouded past before he is found by the Royal soldiers who search for him. Mirra must pass herself off as a Lady travelling in his company and discover his would-be-assassin while trying to find the men who have her brother. But the layers of deceit run deep. Everyone is hiding something. When Mirra discovers her brother is being groomed for a role that will place him at the centre of a dark plot in the Royal Court, she must decide whether her Prince can be trusted. Despite her growing feelings, both have more at stake than their hearts, and if Mirra makes the wrong choice, her brother will die. Main Character description: Sixteen-year-old Mirra has spent most of her life hiding with her family in the northern forests near the frozen mountains and the tundra. She is strong, hardened by a nomadic, fighting existence. Appearance: She has large oval eyes and flat-bridged nose. Sandy light-brown skin, hair light-brown. THE WORLD OF EDERISS: A land of 4 known Kingdoms where darkness reigns for an average of 3 months of the year covering the land in snow and ice, and all creatures hibernate for the Long-sleep. As the sun returns in Spring, the land thaws quickly, turning towards the All-day-sun of summer. Cover ideas. These are just ideas I’m open to anything you think is good. Models are optional, not required. I want the cover to convey a promise of action, intrigue, adventure. A feeling of danger and excitement. Cover needs to be striking as a thumb-nail image. I’ve included appearance of main character but don’t want anything too representative (Please note: You do not have to represent the main character.) Ideally cover should have cross-over potential for male audience so nothing ‘girly’. Design could possibly include some hint of the glitter-eyes of Mirra’s people – these are brown /blue eyes that have flecks of gold that scintillate inside the irises until child reaches age of seven or eight.
