Oh, not everything, I suppose. Yes, I turned a pumpkin into a coach and mice into horses. The stroke of midnight, the glass slippers, and the prince searching for a girl whose foot fit the shoe…those were all part of the story. And yet, the prince didn’t just fall in love with Cinderella because she looked good at the ball. Pigeon feathers and pollywogs! Could you respect him if he did? I most certainly could not. No, no, there was vastly more that happened before the night of the ball, and a great deal of international intrigue after. Cinderella was a warrior who saved the life of the prince and defended her kingdom from oppressors who were plotting to overthrow the king. They didn’t tell you that part? It’s time, past time, for you to know the true story of the real Cinderella. Design elements Most importantly, I would like a cover that is eye-catching, compelling, and attractive to the target audience, teens and young adults. Two important features of the story need to be communicated: one, that it is a Cinderella story. Ways of communicating this include images such as a glass slipper, a pumpkin-shaped carriage, a young woman in a light blue ball gown, a castle in the background, etc. (please don't feel that you have to use all these images--one or two will suffice) And two--that this Cinderella is a warrior. She is strong, determined, and an accomplished swordsman. Ways of communicating this include: a sword, a fighting stance, a determined (rather than romantic) glint in her eye, etc.
The story takes place in the middle ages in no specified year, but given the fairy tale nature of the story, any full-skirted light blue ball gown that's not obviously anachronistic should suffice. Horses also play a prominent role, as does the Fairy Godmother, who is the narrator of the story. The Fairy Godmother is able to change size, from a tiny dot to a full-size human, so if you choose to represent her, feel free to make her any size (the smaller the better, I should think). She can fly and also emits fairy dust. Given the title, "Cinders", it might be a nice effect to have glowing cinders or perhaps a clash of sparks on sword blades, surrounded by a swirl of glittery fairy dust. This could be a very eye-catching feature if done well. Cinderella is blond and wears her hair up for the ball, later in a braid. The Fairy Godmother is not described in much detail. she is not the portly Disney version nor is she Tinkerbell, though I do imagine she has wings. Mostly she just looks like a woman about middle age.
