Void Boundary – Book 1: The Axelon Monocracy Joseph Hitt This is a science fiction novel that I have had in the works for almost two years. I think of it as “the science-fiction novel that needed to be written”, and I am very excited to see what can be created in terms of cover art. I will provide a lot of info here (to be helpful) but I am open to artistic interpretations as well as more photorealistic interpretations. More than anything, I’m looking for something that invokes emotion in the viewer. There are many themes in this science fiction novel, but the primary theme involves an interstellar society of millions of clones of a single man – Axelon, who is described as wiry, of medium stature, with bright blonde hair and blue eyes. He is no male model, but average-looking, his stare is blank, empty. Note that the book isn't focused on cloning (the Axelons are not technically clones, actually molecular reproductions). So please - no images of DNA strands. The typical Axelon dresses in one of two types of clothing: the majority wear some kind of bland fitted jumpsuit that is work-practical, perhaps with pockets but I will leave that open. Others wear a more militant style tactical uniform (preferably black). The military types would not have a specific rank, insignia, or awards, but might optionally have some utilitarian items attached to the uniform. The military types are armed with a compact sonic assault rifle (uzi-size), but if you show this it is important that this item not look comical. A small handful of Axelons are apt to dye their hair in different colors, and wear different clothing -- feel free to experiment here, these are the ones that are trying to change their appearance for various practical reasons, such as attempting to fit in among other societies. An extreme rarity among them is what is called the “mark of the original”, which is a small black diamond tattoo under the left eye (his left, which is the right side when looking at him -- to be clear). For the cover, I am imagining a view of a crowd or a mass of these clones from a camera angle that is tilted downward onto them, perhaps 15-20 or more in the frame. As to how these men are organized (loosely walking around, tightly packed like a concert, or even in rows such as military ranks) – this is all up to your artistic preference. My idea is that one of the Axelons, perhaps in the center of the crowd, or perhaps nearest the camera perspective, should have the black diamond tattoo under his left eye. This Axelon, and only this one – could be looking directly at the camera/viewer. This could be an interesting, perhaps slightly disturbing effect which would contribute to the theme greatly. It should be daytime, and I believe a white (or at least bright) background would work (from white concrete or stone pavement that the clones are walking on). As to any other items, buildings, etc, that you wish to show from below -- they should be futuristic-looking of course, but not required. Please note: I will be shying away from cut-and-paste interpretations where the same image is repeated. I would like to see some interesting perspective, where each clone has some subtle differences. I would also tend to prefer illustrated people to stock photos. As for the title layout, up to you. I was thinking “VOID BOUNDARY” in one or two lines across the top, and then in small text, slightly to one side of the bottom half, “BOOK 1: THE AXELON MONOCRACY”. Not sure how this will work against the crowd-of-clones background, but again I will leave that up to you. The text color could be something that works with the blond hair color. The author name should not be too huge, and probably at the bottom. As I mentioned earlier, I am open to more artistic interpretations as well. So if you like to use some effect like blur or pixelation, go for it but not required. I would like to deliver on several e-book platforms including: Amazon Kindle, Amazon CreateSpace (physical paper book), Kobo, Apple iTunes. If you are familiar with these formats, any expertise is welcome. I would like a spine for CreateSpace. It is my understanding that the image should wrap to the back for CreateSpace. The spine should show, Title, Author, Subtitle, and show an additional number “1” (as in Book 1), perhaps with a circle around it at the bottom, so that future installments can show the numbers.
Some excerpts from novel text that I think provide a clearer picture: "…blond hair falling to the sides of his high forehead." (not long hair, however) "He had constructed dozens of these devices – morphological tubes – and before anyone was keen to his plan, he created hundreds of copies of the one person he believed was the ideal human – himself." "It was not without some surprise that Axelon turned out to be far worse than just a narcissist, but a well-disguised psychopath. Unfortunately, this meant that his clones, having his memories, abilities, and mental facility – were also psychopaths. The Axelons knew we would not submit to this new 'perfect' government, and they had already been well prepared to attack. This is when they showed the true, genocidal nature of this man and his minions. Their plan all along was to rid Brekosha of any genes that were not precisely their own." "Alice glanced at her captors out of the corner of her eye. Each of them blond, each with the same blue-eyed blank stare, clothes varying only slightly." “Neil, if that's you, look up.” Neil turned his head upward toward him, confirming himself to his partner high above. Kepler jumped, the default gravbelt setting slowing him to a safe, solid landing. They walked farther, continuing to observe the cityscape, the massive production centers, chemical and mineral processing, nanoproduction factories. A peek through the gates of several such installations revealed immense covered hangars, under which armored interstellar ships were being constructed in addition to fighting drones, mechanized assault vehicles, and munitions. The two came to a wide waterway, traversed by multiple bridges. A walk onto the nearest bridge afforded an appreciation of the scale of the society before them. Continuing to filter through the data, Sarah was the first to point out that another Axelon near them had an undereye tattoo identical to the one worn by Bob – the small black diamond." “The Axelons are constructing a fleet,” added Sarah, noting information from the stolen transmissions,. “with the purpose of taking control of Isomar some number of weeks from now. They have been producing the militant variety of Axelons on Isomar over the past several months, and these troops will attempt to usurp the defense systems in order to allow the assault to succeed."
