Entertainment & The Arts
The Bitter Taste of Dying is a memoir about drug abuse, the depravity required to maintain addiction, played out in 6 countries on 3 continents. It's the depths of addition coupled with the beauty of making it out alive.
What's your vision?
Ultimately, you're the artist. You have licence to use a creativity that I lack. Despite the title, "The Bitter Taste of Dying," the book is not totally dark. It's funny at times, self-deprecating in others, while appropriately dark in some places. I want a cover that jumps out at you, that makes you take notice of THIS book that's on THIS shelf, next to all these other books, without being "flashy" or gaudy. The ebook version will be on a page of other titles and it needs to stand out against these. That page and the other titles it will be next to can be found here: http://thoughtcatalog.com/books/ The cover should be noticeable in this collection. The book will be in both print and an ebook (kindle, iTunes, etc.). Spine and back cover should match. Should be formatted to work with createspace. Since there is no subtitle, the cover needs to communicate the contents of the book. The book deals primarily with prescription drug abuse (Vicodin, Norco, Xanax, Fentanyl, OxyContin). I'd like the "Rx" symbol (attached example), signifying prescription drugs, to be somewhere on the cover. Possibilities: The "R" in "Bitter" The "R" in "A Memoir" The Rx could be somewhere else on the cover as well. These are just ideas. The Rx symbol should probably only be used once in the cover to avoid overkill, unless you can make it work with an idea you have in mind. Perhaps the European green pharmacy sign "+" (example attached) could also be somewhere in the cover, but only if it fits. It shouldn't feel forced. Incorporating both would be nice, as long as it's a natural fit. **Both attachments are just examples and should not themselves be used. "A Memoir" should be on the cover, with appropriate/traditional spacing around it. "Jason Smith" as author. The memoir takes place in California, Tijuana, Prague, Italy, France, and Shanghai. It's not necessary to include these, but feel free to use if they lend toward your creativity. That's your call. The audience: -Anyone struggling with Addiction. -Anyone who's battled addiction and made it into the world of recovery. -Anyone who loves someone going through addiction and wants to understand why we do what we do in active addiction. -Anyone who enjoys reading stories about globetrotting adventures. -Readers of memoirs. Primary Concerns: -The artwork should not lean heavily on current design trends. I'd like it to last a long time, and not look out of date in a year or two. -Recognizability. The artwork should be unique enough that people can recognize it at a glance, even amongst a sea of other books. It should not be easily confused with another book cover. -Content Communication. With no subtitle, there should be subtle hints as to the contents of the book, without making the cover too busy or gaudy. Things to Avoid: -No unnecessary ornamentation. There should be a good explanation for why every element of the artwork exists. Please feel free to push the boundaries. I'll be choosing the most unique designs and the most responsive designers as finalists.
The publisher attaches a black box with their name on the books, as can be seen here: http://thoughtcatalog.com/book/bone-tongue/ I'm not sure if they'll allow creativity on this, but feel free if you have time to work that small black box into the design. Please include spine and back cover.
