We are a small, independent publishing company with a penchant for great book design. Our books appeal to a general adult readership with a discerning taste for quality and quirkiness.
What's your vision?
We need an eye-catching book cover for a novel called 'Being Bridie: the diary of an aspiring mother' by Casey O'Connor. One reviewer said, "This book is amazing: it goes from chick-lit to thriller to who-done-it back to romance all in one story!" The colours and typography particularly should say chick-lit. The main imagery is as follows: an open diary on a desk, with a pen and a half-drunk glass of red wine beside it (I like the idea of the sub-title being written in the pages of the diary); OR a pair of women's wellies with a pair of small girl's wellies beside it and a dog lead or muddy paw prints; OR a beach with a woman and girl walking side by side in the distance with two golden labrador dogs; OR a mother's hand holding a child's hand (about 7 years of age) – this is some of the imagery from the book, but feel free to be creative! HERE IS A NOTE SENT TO DESIGNERS AFTER FIRST DESIGNS CAME IN: Hi Everyone – we do like the designs you've sent to date, but I think I may have put too much emphasis on the 'chick-lit' element. Some of it is a bit 'girly' where in fact the main character is a woman in her thirties who can't have children and tries to foster, but the foster girl is difficult and bullying... So I love what you've sent, but wonder if there's a way we could try something a bit more... serious in tone (although the book is funny too). That's why I thought symbols like a pair of ladies and children's wellies in a doorway might say something about trying to be together; or a woman and a child in the distance on a beach, which might express loneliness or sadness in some way. Sorry - I'm not changing the brief, as what you've sent so far is really good, but I'm a bit worried we're going too much down the Bridget Jones/Marian Keyes route here. Hope you can send in some other ideas. Thanks for all your hard work.
The book is funny, sad and romantic. The little girl is naughty, red haired, scruffy and throws things. They like swimming in the local pool, so that could be an element in the design. One symbol might be 'jumping in the deep end'. They have two golden labrador dogs that are always trying to escape; the house is quite modern and posh, but untidy. There is a bit of religious iconography in the house (Catholic).
