I need a striking and original book cover for a Victorian detective novel. The same design should work for both e-book and print book format.
What's your vision?
I'm looking for a retro cover which evokes the type of cheap, sensationalistic pulp novels which were sold in the late Victorian era (a.k.a Penny Dreadfuls). I have attached some examples. Although the examples are all black and white, I do want the cover to be in colour (or at least have some colour on it - it could just be two or three colours)
I have attached a picture which I have bought from Shutterstock (see jpeg called The Ornamental Hermit). It would be great if you could use (a close up) of this image, however if you can supply better pictures, I'd be happy to use those too. The following text must be included on the front cover. Title: The Ornamental Hermit Subtitle: A D.S.Billings Victorian Mystery Author: Olivier Bosman Other sensationalistic sounding phrases such as "The shocking tale of ..." or "The harrowing story of...." can also be included. It might also be good to put a price of "one penny" on the cover (as this is the reason Penny Dreadfuls were thus named), although it must be made clear that this is for design purposes only as the real price will, of course, be higher. The following text must be included in the back cover: "The year is 1890. Detective Sergeant John Billings is a Quaker. He sees God in everyone and takes other people's suffering to heart. He is an honest and hard working man, who has risen swiftly through the ranks to become one of Scotland Yard's youngest detectives. But in his private life he struggles with the demons of loneliness, morphine addiction and homosexuality. While Scotland Yard is in the midst of foiling a Russian counterfeiting operation, Billings is asked to investigate the cold blooded murder of Lord Palmer by a rough looking vagrant called Brendan Lochrane. At the same, Billings is approached by a wealthy banker and family acquaintance who wants him to investigate the disappearance of his son, Sebastian Forrester, who ran away from university ten years ago and was never heard of since. Billings travels the length and breadth of Britain to retrace the steps of Sebastian Forrester and Brendan Lochrane, only to find that both men's stories are intimately connected and that he is slowly becoming embroiled in a web of corruption and deceit which goes right to the heart of Scotland Yard. 'The Ornamental Hermit' is a thrilling mystery which leads the reader on a colourful journey into Victorian England. This is the 2nd book in the D.S.Billings Victorian Mysteries series, but it can be enjoyed as a stand alone story." The spine must just have the title (without the subtitle) and the name of the author.

@sirjotajota is an extremely responsive designer who delivers. I needed a cover design like yesterday and was frustrated by the attempts of two designers. He had just completed a seriously HOT cover and was the logical choice. I am so thankful that he took on my project as the prior design lacked that WOW factor, the edge I needed to launch my brand. I am happy to say that I have it now thanks to you. :o)
Along the way, they met lots of talented designers…
