What's your vision?
I want a cover for my YA novel, Return to Kaitlin. I have no idea of the look and no preconceptions. Blurb: Oil rig jobs are dull, dirty, dangerous--and highly paid, which is why 19-year-old Tyler Hogan heads for the oil fields. Ty's quest for a rig job takes him on a three-thousand mile odyssey across northern Canada and back. He faces adversity; learns hard, sometimes bitter lessons; and returns home nine months later, a man. I have no preconceptions about the cover. Images that come to my mind include: 1. highways and a pothole (which leads to a major turning point) 2. a line shack and big skies 3. an oil rig. 4. a Nissan Pathfinder The hero, Ty Hogan, is tall and good looking

Return to Kaitlin: synopsis Freshman Tyler Hogan’s world falls apart quickly after he loses his girlfriend: he narrowly misses a student while driving drunk and at Christmas is expelled from college for failing grades. His best friend Barty urges him to focus on their trip to Peru next summer. Ty manages to land a job in the oil patch in northern BC. It falls through soon after he arrives but perseveres and finds work and a place to stay while continuing to search for a high-paying rig job. Eventually his efforts pay off: he finds work on a rig a thousand miles away. He celebrates while babysitting for his rooming-house hosts. They arrive home to find him drunk. Driving to the new job, Ty hits a pothole and flips his car on black ice outside the town of Kaitlin. Although unhurt, he is taken to hospital and later discovers the car has been ruined by the tow truck operator, Crusher Harmon. He also finds he’s on the hook for thousands of dollars in ambulance, fire, towing and mechanics’ bills because he had only third-party insurance. He picks a fight with Harmon, is dumped unconscious outside town, nursed back to health by a farming family, and befriended by their five-year-old son, Mason. He learns there are three Harmon brothers, one of whom is mayor, and that Crusher and Zack have a monopoly on towing and repairs in Kaitlin. Ty doesn’t care: he finds another opening as a roughneck on a rig. The new job is in the remote north, twelve-hour shifts for two weeks, then a week off. Ty joins the crew resentful, fearful and deeply in debt. His first paycheck is nearly a month away, so when they fly south for their week off he gets a job at a gym in return for martial arts lessons, and beds down in a line shack outside town. As the weeks pass, he settles in to camp life and begins to earn big money while Barty, on spring break, has discovered Napoleon brandy (“It’s my muse, LOL”) and is writing a screenplay. As drilling proceeds, progress slows and tension rises along with the accident rate. Eventually the well is completed and proved. During the celebration, a drunken Ty loses thousands on a crap game. With a week off between jobs, he returns to Kaitlin. He offers to babysit Mason while his parents go to a political rally for a candidate who opposes Mayor Harmon. Asked if he will be drinking Ty answers, honestly, that he planned to give it a rest. But the question rankles and during the evening, as his thirst grows, he discovers he can no longer just “give it a rest.” He is terrified at the thought of life without alcohol, but resolves to quit. Nervous and unsure of his new, nondrinking self, he asks to stay on at the farm for the week and Crusher finds him there, arriving with his brother and a friend, seeking vengeance on the kid who ruined their cosy monopoly. Ty defeats them and is elated at his newfound competence. Two months later, he heads home, his trip paid for and his tuition, if he can get back into college. Barty, busy writing an epic poem, accepts Ty’s nondrinking status; and their long-awaited trip is on in two days’ time. Nearing home, by sheer chance, Ty glimpses Barty on an airport bus. He catches up with him at the departure terminal. Still drinking, Barty hadn’t the courage to face him and Ty watches in grief and shame as his best friend walks out of his life. In September, waiting for an admission interview with the Dean, he meets the girl he nearly ran over last fall. It’s love at first sight. Her name is Kaitlin. The Dean welcomes him back.
