Entertainment & The Arts
Dopamine is an upcoming novel -- a modern-day cyberpunk technothriller. Featuring hackers, genetic engineering, neuroscience, MAC-10s, cocaine, the Russian mafia, and Dungeons & Dragons. A story of nerds behaving badly.
What's your vision?
"Dopamine", an upcoming technothriller novel, needs a book cover. The story prominently features real contemporary state-of-the-art portrayals of computer hacking, biotechnology, genetic engineering, neuroscience, and so on. It is directly inspired by classic cyberpunk like "Neuromancer" or "Snow Crash", and is written in the "present-day science fiction" style of Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, or James Rollins. The novel's official website can be found at http://dopaminenovel.com/ . There, you will find a plot synopsis. The full text is currently available online there as well under "Read the full story", but obviously it's not necessary to read the book in order to design a cover for it. The book will be released to Kindle first, with a possible subsequent print version slated for later release depending on Kindle performance. Naturally, an attractive Kindle cover is critical to the book's commercial success. Title: Dopamine Author: Mikhail Voloshin Tagline (optional): Many book covers feature additional text to offset the title. If you wish to incorporate such text, use the tagline, "Nerds behaving badly." This may be subject to change; once a few top designs are selected, I'll probably just crowdsource the exact tagline/blurb text anyway. Dimensions: The primary target platform for this contest will be the Amazon Kindle. Kindle guidelines recommend a height:width ratio of 1.6 (https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId=A2J0TRG6OPX0VM). Entries should have a pixel resolution of somewhere between 1562x2500 and 6250x10000. Non-Kindle treatments, such as a back cover or jacket leafs, are certainly nice to have, but making sure it looks good as a Kindle cover is this project's top priority. With the contest now in progress, I feel it's necessary to add this: Any designs incorporating the distinctive vertical cascading green text from "The Matrix" will be summarily eliminated. This is not for personal or stylistic reasons, but simple legal ones.
While it's not necessary (and probably unwise anyway) to show literal scenes/characters/objects from the book, some of these may serve as inspiration. As such, I'm attaching sketches/images/photos of various depictions of the story. In the image assets of this design request, you will find the following: 1. A sketch of a male silhouette holding a homemade rifle-like electronic contraption. This device, a portable electromagnetic pulse cannon that can disable electronics, features prominently in the storyline. It's the primary weapon wielded by the protagonist, and is intrinsically associated with him -- akin to King Arthur's Excalibur or Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum. In terms of size, weight, and how it's intended to be held, the best real-world analogy would be a bazooka. Here's a link to a collection of photos of a friend of mine posing with a prop mockup of the weapon: http://bit.ly/1TpmS8b 2. A photo of a special kind of test tube called an Eppendorf vial -- about the size of a pinkie finger, made of transparent plastic, with a cap on top and a conically tapered bottom. These are used ubiquitously in microbiology. This particular one has a yellow smiley face sticker on it. In "Dopamine", this smiley-faced Eppendorf vial is the primary MacGuffin for most of the plotline. It contains a genetically modified strain of E. coli bacteria that have been spliced with DNA from Columbian coca plants to produce copious amounts of cheap, high-quality cocaine. You don't have to directly use any of these images or concepts in your design, but you're certainly welcome to do so. I will include them here just in case you find them to be useful as starting points. Please visit http://dopaminenovel.com/ for a story synopsis. (Or even to read the full text, if you want, but of course that's not necessary for designing the cover.)
