Entertainment & The Arts
I have re-imagined the Rumplestilskin story for a YA audience, primarily girls 15 and older.
What's your vision?
I need a book cover for a fairy tale re-imagination of the Rumplestilskin story. The main character in my story is not Rumplestilskin (although he is a main character), but Aoife (pronounced Eefuh) the girl who unravelled the mystery of Rumplestiskin’s name, a name unknown even to him. She frees him from a lifetime of believing he was so deformed that his own mother didn’t love him enough to name him. Two versions of the cover will be needed: One e-book cover that meets the amazon kindle cover guidelines https://kdp.amazon.com/help?topicId…TRG6OPX0VM a JPEG file of less than 50 MB One 6 X 9 paperback cover that meets the CreateSpace guidelines for a book of 248 pages (.558496 spine width) https://www.createspace.com/Product…verPDF.jsp a print-ready PDF with a maximum file size of 40 MB. CreateSpace recommends that for optimal printing, all images for both the cover are at least 300 DPI. Book title: Twisted Subtitle: The Real Story of the Girl Rumplestilskin Tried to Trick Author: Bonnie M Hennessy Back Cover blurb: Forget the stories you have heard about Rumplestilskin and the child he tried to steal from me. The boys who wrote my story down left out some of the best parts. For instance, while my father was throwing money away on alcohol and women, I was running our farm. When he gambled away everything to the Duke, it was up to me to spin straw into gold to save the farm. With my brains and the help of a magical guardian, I outsmarted the Duke but ended up with a bigger problem. My guardian turned on me and sent me on a quest to find his lost name, the clues to which were hidden deep in the woods, a moldy dungeon, and a dead woman’s chamber. Let me tell you the whole story of the girl who solved a riddle so mysterious that not even the man who spun straw into gold could figure it out. Not until I came along.
I am rather open to cover designs, as long as they are eye-catching, compelling, and attractive to the target audience, teenage girls. I notice that many fairytale retellings have covers with a strong looking girl with flowing hair and dress. I am not opposed to this, but I am also not set on it either. If a girl is used, my female protagonist is about 19 with chestnut hair and is no damsel in distress. She should look strong and unabashed, not demur. She is known for letting down her hair and riding her horse barefoot through the woods, where she often meets Rumplestilskin and his magic. If the main character is on the cover, the story takes place in the middle ages in no specified year. Given the fairy tale nature of the story, any full-skirted dress should do. However, I don’t want anything corny or childish; this is for 15 and older. I don’t want to see any castles in the background. I also like covers I have seen that center on elements of the story other than the protagonist. For my story these might include the spinning wheel (although I want to avoid a cover that might look like a Sleeping Beauty story), the gold that is spun by Rumplestilskin, and the ring that is magically sealed onto Aoife’s finger (the magic spell Rumplestilskin casts on it has turned it from a sapphire color to a murky, cloudy surface which looks like a frothing witch’s cauldron.
