Summary: Auf dem Vulkan is a yet unpublished science fiction and adventure novel from 1930. The author describes how botanist James Bell accidentally finds a utopic society living on volcanic island ‘Ijlona’ somewhere near Iceland. The Ijlonese have invented mobile phones and use radars on their aeroplanes, objects that the botanist has never seen before. Mr. Bell admires their very social society and their advanced knowledge of science. In time, he also falls in love with charming Olivia. But he finds out that the volcano threatens to erupt and erase all life on the tiny island. Faced with this menace, Mr. Bell does his utmost to help the people of Ijlona. Our ideas for the cover: a) The novel is very much inspired by Jules Vernes’ books, so a dash of steampunk would not go amiss. Mr. Bell is an explorer and scientist, so we’re thinking along the lines of ancient maps, sailing ships, a compass, sextants, notes on botany, etc. as inspiration. b) All of the above – but with a modern design instead of an old fashioned one. c) A photograph of a ship designed by the author himself. d) Ijlona is supposed to be somewhere between Iceland and the coast of Greenland. Perhaps that can serve as an inspiration. For instance: The Sea of Ice, a painting by Caspar David Friedrich. It is public domain and you can find a high resolution here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sea_of_Ice e) We would like to give the impression of an old, much used notebook or diary bound in leather, perhaps with coffee stains on the cover, yellowed paper, and similar signs of usage. f) We are of course open to any kind of other ideas!
