Entertainment & The Arts
We write light-hearted science-fiction and fantasy books. So our target audience are readers who like their books with lots of action and laughs.
What's your vision?
We would like a cover for the second book in our Greenstar series, called "Greenstar Season Two". The series is set over a thousand years in the future and features a cast of funny characters struggling to survive on a rundown ship called the Greenstar. We want a wraparound cover for the paperback and an ebook cover. The cover should reflect the fact that series is science fiction and funny, along with having an action feel. The paperback will be 6x9 inches for the front and back covers each, with the spine measuring 1.2025 inches in width. The ebook version of the cover should be at least 3000px in height X 2008px in width. The main character is called Josie Stein and is forty-two, Caucasian and plain-looking. She has brown hair. On the ship they wear silver jumpsuits (Just like in 80s science fiction). They also use ray guys. There's aren't required elements of the cover, just possibilities.
The cover of the previous book is attached, but don't feel constrained to follow the design of that cover. Since it was designed by us, it may be replaced by another cover in the future. In previous contests we've been prescriptive in what we wanted from designers, which has led to some great designs, but we've seen some amazing things in other contests where they gave less of a description of the scene for the cover and more of the feeling that it should be generate. So we've kept the details limited, but we can supply any information needed. Just ask. Question 1: Are the books slapstick style humour or more subtle humour? Answer: The books tend to have a lot of the slapstick, silly kind of humour in them. Question 2: What kind of person is Josie? Answer: Josie is a 21st century space engineer, so she's intelligent (with a doctorate) and a take charge kind of person. The rest of the crew can be a little self-involved or scatterbrained, so she's the voice of reason, trying to get them to help one another and other people. She's kind-hearted and always wants the best for people, whether they be human or alien. She wouldn't be a military type or anything like that. She's a mother, so imagine her more as that: a mother trying to get her crazy kids to behave. Question 3: Does Josie have glasses? Answer: No. Question 4: Are there any key scenes or themes you could give a brief description about without giving too much away? Do the characters mainly stay on the ship, or do they visit different worlds? Are you guys solely focused on having Josie on the cover? Are there any other books / tv series that compare to Greenstar? (ie Starwars meets The Hitchhikers guide?) Answer: Here are some highlights from the season: Josie and the Greenstar are on the run from another ship, which fires at them as they slingshot around planets; Josie and the Greenstar visit a world where aliens are made of crystals, as are their buildings and animals. Everything in their world is crystalline; The Greenstar fights aliens in the space near Earth; Josie and the young, female, Asian captain of an enemy ship play pooh sticks (from Winnie the Pooh). The characters visit quite a few worlds, as well as being in space battles. We're not focused on Josie on the cover at all. As long as the cover conveys funny science-fiction, that's the main thing. The cover is a way to hook readers and let them know what to expect more than to tell them what story elements will be inside. We've been compared to Hitchhikers Guide and Red Dwarf in reviews. I guess those would be the closest match. Question 5: How are you rating designs? Answer: 1 star means that we can't really use a design, even with major changes; 2 stars means that a design would need major changes; 3 stars means a design needs minor changes; 4 stars means a design is almost perfect; 5 stars is reserved for "OMG".
