No matter what kind of business you’re in, if you want to be successful, you need to build a solid brand. Your brand identity—which includes everything from your logo to your typography to your color palette—is what makes you unique. It’s what sets you apart from the competition and lets your customers know who you are and what you’re about. If your brand was a Big Mac, your brand identity is the “special sauce.”

Designing your brand identity is super important—and because it’s so important, it’s not a task you want to tackle on your own. It takes a certain kind of talent (specifically, brand designers) to build a brand from the ground up.

How to get the best brand design

When it comes to brand design, you have a few different options.

If you’re at the very beginning of the branding process, go with a design contest

If you’re just getting started and don’t have the basic assets to launch your brand (like a logo, business card and corporate letterhead) and/or you’re not exactly sure the direction you want to take your brand, a logo and brand identity design contest is a great way to get input from a variety of talented designers. Once you create your design brief, designers from across the globe can pitch you their ideas for your brand design. You narrow down your options to a top few choices, work with each to perfect the looks, then pick whichever designer you feel best brought your brand to life as the winner. Once the design contest is over, you’ll have the foundation you need to grow and develop your brand over time—and an awesome designer to help!

If you’ve already got the basics, work one-on-one with a freelancer

brand guide
By LePro

If you already have the basic assets for your brand and you’re just looking to supplement with additional designs—like a brand style guide to pull all your ideas together and get your team on the same page—or you’re 100% clear on what you want for your brand design, then working with a freelancer one-on-one is a great option.

When you work directly with a freelancer, you have a sense of control in the process; while you’ll definitely want to get their professional input (you did hire them to design, after all), you can tell them exactly what you’re looking for and the ultimate vision you have for your brand—and then work with them on each element of your brand identity until it fits that vision.

Are you thinking working directly with a freelancer is a better fit? If so, keep reading!

How did we choose these as the top brand designers?

At 99designs, we’re committed to helping you find the best designers for your projects—and in order to do that, we’ve put together a clear set of criteria we use to help you connect with the top talent for your design needs:

Level of skill

By Eastwood Studio ®

Every designer on 99designs is put through a portfolio review, where our in-house design experts evaluate their work and depth of skill. Each designer’s portfolio is evaluated for:

  • Conceptual thought and creativity
  • Technical execution
  • Knowledge of design principles

Once our experts evaluate a designer’s portfolio, they’re assigned to one of three levels:

  • Top Level: designers with a high-level of creativity and design expertise
  • Mid Level: designers who have a solid portfolio of examples and are on their way to establishing themselves as design experts
  • Entry Level: up-and-coming designers who show a high level of promise, but don’t have a ton of experience under their belt

Before you choose a designer, you’ll be able to see which level they are and, depending on your needs and budget, which will be the best fit for your design project.

Experience

Not all good designers are created equal; just because a designer is incredible at creating a website doesn’t mean they’re the right person to design your logo and brand.

When putting together our recommendations, we take into account every designer’s experience within each category—that way, you know every designer we present has a significant amount of experience (and samples!) helping to shape and design brands.

Professionalism

We want to make sure you have a positive experience working with your designer, which is why we take professionalism—including responsiveness, adherence to deadlines, and communication skills—into account when rating our designers. That way, you know whomever you hire is not only amazing at design, but knows how to handle themselves like a professional.

What to think about when hiring a brand designer

Hiring a brand designer to bring your brand identity to life is an important decision—which is why you need to make sure you choose the right designer for the job. But what, exactly, do you need to keep in mind to make sure that happens?

  • Look for diversity in their portfolio samples: If your looking for a designer to create your logo, it should go without saying you should hire a designer with plenty of logos in their portfolio. But brand design is a little bit different; you need someone who can see the big design picture and tie all the elements together to create a cohesive brand. Look for designers with a diverse set of samples so you know they can help you build your brand design from the ground up.
  • Look for a designer with a similar style: You want your designs to be in line with who you are as a brand. Are you trying to do something edgy with your branding? Then it doesn’t make sense to hire a designer with a portfolio full of traditional designs. And vice versa.
  • Anticipate your brand’s design needs: Different brands need different things from their designer—so before choose the designer for your brand, think about what, exactly, it is you need. For example, if you’re a restaurant brand, you’re going to need menus and signage, so you’ll want to work with someone who has experience designing for print. If you’re building an app, you want someone with a ton of experience in the digital space who knows how to create user-friendly mobile design. The point is, when choosing a brand designer, make sure you’re anticipating your brand’s needs—and choosing a designer who can deliver.
